A bit of history

Sun Microsystems was founded in 1982 around the idea that powerful technical workstations should be built for a networked world. Its early systems combined UNIX, high-resolution graphics and Ethernet, becoming essential tools in universities, engineering companies and the emerging internet industry.

Sun developed the SPARC RISC architecture and Solaris operating system while promoting open network standards through its famous “The Network Is the Computer” philosophy. Its servers and workstations helped host the early web, and technologies such as Java extended Sun's influence far beyond its own hardware.
