The IBM PC Server 315 (Type 8638) was IBM’s entry-level departmental server, announced worldwide in May 1997. It offered either a 200MHz or 180MHz Pentium Pro processor with an integrated 256KB L2 write-back cache, backed by 32MB of EDO ECC memory as standard, expandable to 512MB. Expansion came via four 32-bit PCI slots, two ISA slots and one combination PCI/ISA slot, while a dedicated Wide Ultra SCSI PCI adapter and six drive bays allowed up to roughly 22.63GB of storage. Positioned for small and medium businesses, it handled file, print, email and intranet web-serving duties, and in some markets shipped bundled with Lotus Notes and IBM’s Tivoli NetFinity management software.
